To: U.S, From: Venezuela

Hi everyone! Today I wanted to share with you a more personal story about how my family came to the United States. I arrived in Miami about ten years ago from Venezuela. While I lived in Venezuela with my mom and my sister, my parents continued the challenge that it was obtaining a VISA. In the meantime, my dad was working in the U.S trying to secure a job and make money to support us back in Venezuela.

My family had been separated for years.

I would only see my dad about twice a year and I know I'm lucky he stuck by us and I was able to see him even that often. The VISA situation finally was approved and we arrived in Miami. As most of you know, Miami is the melting pot of Florida so I was not completely shocked when arriving here in the summer. However, as soon as school started I knew it would be a very difficult journey to go through.

I remember feeling embarrassed to speak even a word of English. Suddenly, I felt like I didn't know a thing. Thankfully, there was an ESOL program that helped kids like me learn English and I began to feel more confident in reading. I couldn't believe how fast I was learning and I am beyond grateful for my teachers.

It was also tough on my parents since they had to find jobs to support us. I am happy to have gone through it all because 10 years later, I am only three months away from obtaining my bachelor's degree. With full scholarships and lots of hard work, I was able to pay for my education.

I wanted to share this story with you to inspire you that you can do anything you set your mind to. I focused on applying and putting my all into scholarship applications and I did it.

Be passionate and grateful every step of the way loves and life will reward you.
